The problem

Most people approach consulting toolkits the wrong way — because nobody ever explained the context.

You can buy the best consulting toolkit in the world and still open it feeling lost. What does a steering committee actually do? Who is the engagement lead? Why does the vendor prepare deliverables the client signs off? These aren't obvious unless you've lived inside a consulting engagement. This guide closes that gap — in under an hour.

🗺️
No map of the landscape
Most people know consulting exists but couldn't explain the difference between a vendor engagement and a client-side project — or why it matters.
🎭
Roles that aren't self-explanatory
BA Lead, SA Lead, Engagement Director, Project Sponsor — these titles mean specific things on a live engagement. Guessing gets expensive.
📋
Jargon with no translation
SOW, RACI, steering committee, change request, UAT sign-off — fluent in any toolkit, invisible to anyone who hasn't been briefed.
Inside the guide

The consulting world, mapped for practitioners.

Not theory. Not academic frameworks. The actual structure of how consulting engagements run — from the first business development conversation to the final operations handover.

10 Terms Every Practitioner Needs to Know

📄
Statement of Work (SOW)
The document that defines exactly what is being delivered, by when, and at what cost. The single most referenced document in any dispute.
🏛️
Steering Committee
The senior governance body that meets regularly to make decisions, resolve escalations, and keep the engagement aligned with business objectives.
🔄
Change Request (CR)
The formal mechanism for agreeing any change to scope, timeline, or budget. Informal changes without a signed CR are how engagements go over budget.
User Acceptance Testing (UAT)
The client-side testing phase where the delivered system is validated against agreed requirements. Sign-off here is typically a payment milestone trigger.
📊
RACI Matrix
A responsibility assignment framework — Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed. Defines who does what on every key decision and deliverable.
🎯
Engagement Lead
The vendor-side person accountable for the entire engagement — delivery, relationship, commercial. The client doesn't care about subcontractors or team structure. They care about this person.
🤝
Project Sponsor
The senior client-side individual who owns the engagement outcome internally. When the sponsor disengages, governance collapses. When they leave, the engagement is at risk.
📝
Deliverable
A specific, agreed output produced by the consulting team — a document, a system configuration, a training session. Deliverables are what invoices are tied to.
🚀
Go-Live
The point at which a system or process becomes operational in the client's live environment. Often a major payment milestone and the beginning of the hypercare period.
⚠️
Hypercare
The intensive support period immediately following go-live when the consulting team remains on-site or on-call to stabilise the new system and resolve issues rapidly.
